- working principle
 
The measurement of dissolved oxygen is based on the well-known Clark battery principle. The oxygen-permeable membrane isolates the water sample from the electrode, so there is no need to adjust the sample. Since other reducing or oxidizing ions cannot pass through the gas-permeable membrane, they will not cause interference.
 
A constant voltage is applied to the two electrodes to keep the potential of each electrode constant. The gold working electrode (cathode) reduces dissolved oxygen to hydroxide ions:
 
O2 + 2H2O + 4e--> 4OH
 
The oxidation reaction takes place on the surface of the large silver electrode (anode):
 
4Ag + + 4Br--> 4AgBr + 4e-
 
The oxidation-reduction reaction produces a diffusion current, which is proportional to the dissolved oxygen concentration.
