Principle of operation
 
TIC
 
Acid is added to lower the pH, so that the inorganic carbon is purged out as CO2. The purpose of detecting total inorganic carbon (TIC) is to ensure that it is not brought into the TOC.
 
Oxidation
 
BioTector's patented oxidation method (TSAO) is used to achieve complete and complete oxidation of the sample, including the conversion of organic carbon to CO2. TSAO uses hydroxyl radicals generated by sodium hydroxide combined with oxygen passing through an ozone generator as an oxidant.
 
TOC
 
In order to remove CO2 generated by oxidation, the pH of the sample needs to be lowered again. CO2 is purged out and measured by a specially developed NDIR CO2 analyzer. The result is shown as total organic carbon (TOC).
